Going to a garden center with the intention of bringing home plants for your garden or landscaping is one of those activities where it is vital that you ask questions. Nothing beats the years of experience that a garden center staff usually has, and it will be far more helpful than anything you could read because it will be fine-tuned to your area’s climate and soil conditions. So, don’t be shy, ask the following questions and anything else you can think of.
- What does this particular plant need? You’ll need to know how much sunlight and water it needs, as well as whether you should add fertilizer, and if so, which kind.
- Is this an annual or perennial? Nothing is more frustrating than setting up a huge landscaped flower bed and expecting it to stay that way, only to learn that you planted exclusively annuals and must do it again next year. It can be a real cost-saver to choose at least a few perennials, both in the cost of plants and the cost of your time to replant.
- How will this look when mature? This is especially important with hedges and trees. Not only do you want to know how large they can get, but how quickly they grow. For example, if you are looking for a tree to provide shade in your lifetime, choosing a slow-to-mature tree would not achieve your goal.
